About the tutor:

Marche.

Phaedra De Zeeuw graduated from Amsterdam University in 2001. She specialized in Italian Renaissance and Baroque for her MA in the History of Art. After an internship at the Dutch Art History Institute in Florence, and after conducting research in Marche in Art History, she moved permanently to Italy. Together with her partner she started the activities at the Caravanserraglio agriturismo and organizes Art History courses and excursions. Meanwhile she gives lessons in Art History at different institutions and accompanies Art and culture trips in Italy

This course is an excellent introduction to the Italian Art History of Marche. Through a chronological survey we explore the most significant Art Historical moments of the region.

During the Renaissance, roughly defined as the period extending from the middle of the 14th century until the end of the 16th century, Marche witnessed some of the most remarkable acts of artistic creativity in European history. Who were the main patrons of Art of so many great artists like Gentile di Fabriano, Bramante, Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Carlo Crivelli and Lorenzo Lotto?

Various smaller cities in Marche were artistic centres of the Italian Renaissance and on this course we’ll explore the spectacular achievements of artists from San Severino, Camerino, Ascoli and Urbino. You learn about the Venetian style in Marche and the artistic relations between the neighbouring regions Tuscany and Umbria, and about the important role of Rome.
